Xiangxi Global Geopark recently signed an agreement with Malaysia's Langkawi Global Geopark to establish friendship ties, thereby further strengthening international communication. The Malaysian geopark becomes another sister park to Xiangxi Global Geopark, following Satun World Geopark in Thailand, and M'Goun and Ngorongoro Lengai Global Geoparks in Africa.
The agreement signed by the two global geoparks was witnessed by Liu Dongsheng, vice head of the People's Government of the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture and Azmil Munif Mohd Bukhari, tourism manager of the Langkawi Development Authority. The two sides exchanged picture albums.
At the signing ceremony, representatives of Xiangxi and Langkawi Global Geoparks introduced information about the parks and shared their prospects for the future. The two sides will take the friendship establishment as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation in terms of the preservation of geological relics, science research and popularization, talent cultivation, and tourism development.
Langkawi Global Geopark, the first global geopark in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, was officially approved as a UNESCO Global Geopark by a resolution from the UNESCO Executive Board in 2007. The park is known for its beautiful island scenery, peculiar geological landscapes, verdant forests, spectacular waterfalls, and a wide variety of wildlife. The park will also host the 9th Asia Pacific Geoparks Network Symposium in 2026.
